For over 90 years, Lacoste has been at the forefront of British culture and fashion. The brand’s roots can be traced back to 1923 when French professional tennis player René Lacoste lost a bet for a crocodile skin suitcase. It was a nickname that would stick and eventually, in 1933, he would emblazon the now iconic logo onto a plain white polo shirt. The rest is history.
Originally developed as a sports shirt for tennis, the material was a lot more breathable than the regular shirts, meaning players would sweat less. The shorter sleeves were also unheard of but allowed for greater range of motion and flexibility. In short, Lacoste was taking over the world of tennis, and it had the fashion world in its sights…
